Are the UK road accident stats acceptable?

It could be said that one of the most shocking statistics in relation to the UK could be the fact that there are 6 people killed everyday on UK roads. It is initially shocking as this is a high percentage of people per day, but more so that we are causing these accidents ourselves, they are human errors. This is not to say they are purposeful, but they are caused by our own carelessness and lack of awareness.

Of course accidents will always happen, as another characteristic of human beings are their capabilities to make errors and mistakes. However we are intelligent enough to learn from our mistakes and stories around us. According to these statistics we are learning, and the deaths are decreasing, yet we are not learning quick enough.

The reason second to ‘drivers reactions’ is that we ‘drive too fast for the conditions’. This does not necessarily mean we are breaking speed limits, it could simply mean we take corners too fast, causing us to swerve, or that we drive through water on the road too fast, causing us to aquaplane and lose control.

It is a scary prospect that sometimes an accident can be out of our control, it is not only our responsibility to look after ourselves, but to look out for others also. Being aware of other drivers is equally if not more important. Being able to assess situations quickly and safely and pre-empt what may happen is key to safe driving.

So what needs to be remembered is that it our responsibility alone to ensure we keep our roads safe. However bad a condition, or however reckless others may be, by staying aware and concentrating we will see those horrific statistics decrease. If we all take that extra care, we will help keep each other safe.

Car Accident Lawyers are claiming much more for road traffic accidents, therefor driving up the cost of insurance premiums.
